Advertising campaigns that were banned/ considered to be banned
Misleading: to mislead is to suggest that the service or product will offer the audience something that it actually will not.
Examples: Red Bull "it gives you wings" Volkswagen; claimed environmentally friendly cars which aren't
Offensive: Adverts that offend people by making fun of something in an inappropriate way.
Examples: KFC 'halal' advert
Offensive: This ad highlights a woman's body and promotes what the brand believes is the ideal body type, this could be triggering for people who suffer from body image issues and therefore many people likely complained about this advertisement. In addition, the campaign reinforces stereotypes that women need to look a certain way and dress a certain way which many people would find offensive in today's society.Harmful: Interestingly, this advert by the razor company, Gillette can suggest harmful and simply immature behaviour by using a baby in their ad. Furthermore, while the brand is trying to convey the idea that using their razor will leave your skin as smooth and soft as babies, using an actual baby might suggest dangerous themes. Finally, many people complained about this advert as young children saw the ad and wanted to begin shaving which was obviously unsafe.
Misleading: For this advert, it tells the audience directly that using the product will cure your wrinkles in 60 minutes, of course, this isn't true. However, the target audience of 60+ might be more naïve to this and therefore purchase the product due to the misleading information given in the advert. Finally, people complained about this as it was tricking people into buying a product which didn't work and the company didn't have the evidence to prove otherwise.
